  The People

Amicus Cellars (Amicus and X Winery) was established from the foundation of a MBA business plan at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. The plan focused on a winery that would utilize new technologies. These new technologies would lower production costs while creating fine wines at lower prices. The goal was to create wines that had an outstanding value proposition for wine consumers. The plan was written in 2000, and the winery was started that same year.

The winery was originally located in the eastern foothills just north of St. Helena, in the Napa Valley. Today the winery has expanded into three facilities in St. Helena, Napa, and American Canyon. Throughout the winery's rapid growth, it has remained true to its goal of providing a strong quality/price dynamic for all wines produced.

X Winery specializes in Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, but also produces small lots of Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, and Zinfandel. The philosophy of the winery is to produce wines that retail in the super-premium price category of $10-$25 per bottle with a quality consistently better than the category’s competition. The brand was created to fill a niche that the winery identified as an underserved market.

The winery utilizes new technologies along with traditional winemaking to produce wines that have the texture and traditional flavor profile of wines that normally cost two to three times the price.

Amicus Cellars handcrafts only Napa Valley Bordeaux based wines. Each year, the winemaking begins with carefully planned viticulture practices in all four of our vineyards in Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, St. Helena, and Yountville. The goal is to achieve a small berry size so the skin to juice ratio remains high. This leads to wines that have more flavors and are richly extracted.

In the winery, we carefully sort and gently crush these grapes into a wide range of fermenters. Maceration programs change depending on the season, and how the wine is behaving. Post fermentation, malolactic fermentation occurs in carefully selected French oak barrels from the Never, Allier and Limousin forests. After 18 to 26 months (depending on the vintage and barrel selection), the wine is taken from the barrels and bottled.

Be bold and on the cutting edge. Use the latest winemaking research and technology and overlay it with traditional winemaking techniques to coaX into eXistence consumer friendly wines of eXcellence and value that makes them eminently desirable. And to have fun doing it.

X Winery is Keepin' it Green!
X Winery has always been committed to protecting the environment which is why we utilize advanced methods of sustainable viticulture and winemaking.

We support those farmers who use sustainable methods, which integrates three main goals--environmental health, economic profitability, and social and economic equity.

As a company, we are currently a member of the California Certified Organic Farmers and are in the process of certifying our two crush facilities in Napa. We also encourage our grower partners to become CCOF certified members when possible.

In addition, X Winery is part of the TerraCycle program in which our used barrels are recycled and turned into composters and rain barrels used by homeowners throughout the USA. We also use 70-80% recycled glass and streamline our production by reducing excess trucking of packaging supplies.

X Winery Redesigns Wine Label - Press Release
NAPA, California – X Winery has redesigned its wine labels in order to strengthen and increase brand awareness. Releasing to retail shops and restaurants throughout the United States starting this September, the new packaging has a distinctively modern look and feel. The new label features a large mosaic X with coloring appropriate to each varietal. Direct screen-printing is used as an alternative to standard paper labels, which gives a hand-painted look to the new packaging. To create even greater value, no two X designs are alike. As an additional way of reducing waste, the new X bottles will be shipped in re-used, non-printed cartons that are fully recyclable.

X Winery uses advanced winemaking techniques and fruit from premium winegrowing regions throughout California and promotes small grower sustainability. The portfolio consists of quality wines retailing in the $10-$25 price category. “We are an extremely innovative winery, and we wanted our new packaging to reflect that. Our wines have always been, and will remain, quality products, but this new design symbolizes how unique our wines really are,” said Reed Renaudin, Winemaker and CEO.

X Winery was established in 2000 from a MBA business plan created by Renaudin at Cal Poly- San Luis Obispo. The winery specializes in Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc but also produces small lots of Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Napa Valley Bordeaux-based wines. Producing eleven varietals under the X Winery label, the company also has two labels under the Amicus brand. Both brands are nationally distributed in twenty-five markets. X Winery also has a new tasting room and offices located in downtown Napa. The tasting room is open for appointments only.
